Boro waiting on keeper talks

Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate is content to wait to offer goalkeeper Ross Turnbull a new contract at the Riverside.

The 23-year-old's current deal runs out next summer, as does that of Turnbull's rival for a starting spot, Brad Jones.

However, Southgate is not about to offer fresh terms and disrupt the rhythm that Turnbull has found in recent weeks.

He told the Northern Echo: "From Ross' point of view he's negotiating on the field, we had that with David Wheater last year. I want to keep them hungry.

"We haven't lost a player through a contract situation that we've been desperate to keep at this football club.

"When the time's right we'll sit down, but I want him focused on playing and playing well and sometimes other things can be a distraction, so it's picking the right time to have those discussions."

Turnbull is also at ease with the present situation, adding: "It's been fantastic for me this season and I'm determined to make sure it continues.

"My contract is up in the summer, but I'm hoping to be at Middlesbrough for years to come."
